I had to swap hard disks between my two Synology nas systems (920+ main system, 212+ backup system)
So, I swapped one disk form the main to the backup system without formatting (and installed DSM)!. The DSM installation started without any problems but the “firmware installation on disk” got stuck with 4% (even after waiting for minutes).
Solution #
Formatting of the disk! I used my extern HDD docking station for doing this.
I was lazy and used shred (part of the GNU coreutils)
# Example
sudo shred -vn 1 /dev/sdc
With a fresh formatted hard disk, the DSM installation ran as expected.
